November 29

Dear Family and Friends,

November has been a great month filled with Peace. We made beautiful Poppy art to honour Remembrance Day. You will see it displayed in our classroom when you visit next week!

This week we made beautiful holiday cards with the message "Peace and Love" for the Canadian troops who are still fighting overseas. We will be mailing them to thank them for helping keep our world more peaceful.

During December our focus will be on Gratitude.

We will continue exploring what makes our families special. Please talk with your child about some of the special holidays or cultural traditions your family celebrates! We will be sharing these stories about our families as we are sharing our family photos.

Check out the fun song we are learning about families:

In Literacy and Numeracy we are continuing learning the sounds of each letter and how to represent numbers in different ways.

Important Dates and Information

Food Bank - Our school is collecting donations for the food bank this month. If you can, please send in non-perishable food items by December 16th.

December 5/6 - No school for students on Friday December 6 for parent-teacher conferences.

Please book a time slot to come and discuss your child's learning and successes so far in Kindergarten. I will be sharing the Early Years Evaluation results for your child at this meeting. These are 15 minute time slots. If you feel as though you will need more time please email me and we can arrange for a longer meeting. If you need support with booking please follow this link:

Please check out the Learning Commons for the Scholastic Book Fair during your visit to the school!

December 12 - Our first Engineering for Kids session.
Thank you for all those who have returned the forms and money for the Engineering for Kids Program.  Due to some changes, the school will now be paying for the program, so parents no longer need to send $18.  If you have already sent in the money, it will be returned next week in the form of a cheque in your child’s folder.

December 19 - The afternoon kindergarten students will be performing in our Celebration of Learning assembly. I will let you know the time closer to the date. (AM students will have their Celebration of Learning in May)

Snack

  • Due to severe allergies, please don't send any snacks that have nuts
  • Healthy Snack - Please ensure your child has some healthy snacks to choose from. Please don't send candy or chips. Our snack time provides nutrition to the children and helps them have energy to learn. Some ideas are vegetable, fruit, yogurt, cheese, sandwiches, boiled eggs, whole grain crackers and granola bars. Thanks for your support with this.
  • Extra Snack - If your child is in school on FRIDAY please send extra food for your child. They have a long day and get hungry with all our busy activities!
Raz-Kids - Remember that Raz-Kids is an awesome online reading tool that we are subscribed to at CJM. Each child has their own login and password. It is taped to your child's home reading bag. If you have misplaced the login information please let me know and I will print it for you again. :)

Home Reading - Return books to be changed every Thursday

Please have your child read with an adult or sibling every day. You may read the book to them and let them read some of the words if they are able to. Rereading the same book supports success when children are able to remember familiar words and patterns. Throughout kindergarten we will be learning the sounds of the letters and how to blend them together. In your child's book bag is a list of reading strategies that we will also use as the children develop phonemic awareness.

Winter Clothes - As the weather gets colder, please ensure your child has warm, waterproof outdoor clothes. Also keep a change of clothes in their backpack for emergencies. We will continue playing outside as much as possible, as fresh air and exercise are an important part of our students' learning.
